Can you think a day without music ? There’s music everywhere : at home, in a concert hall, in parks, at the seaside and even in the forest. People can not live without music. They listen to music, the dance to music, they learn to play musical instruments. But what is music? Music isn’t a combination of pleasant sounds only. If is an art which reflects life, people’s ideas and emotions.

Music is a language which speaks to everyone-from the day we are born we hear music of some kind most days of our lives. But there are as many different kinds of music as there are different languages, and it is impossible to describe them all. Here are just a few well known types.

This was originally black country music which also came from the Southern States at the beginning of this century. It is slow, usually sad music which is often sung by one person with guitar.

This is serious Western European music from the Middle Ages to the present (1500 to day) and it was often written for a large orchestra, e.g. a symphony, or for a small group of players, e.g. a quartet or a duel. Many instruments can be used. A lot of music was also written to be sung-as opera. It is very popular and schools often teach this type of music.

1.Read that Dima says about music.
Yes, I love music. I listen to it all the time . I’ve got a Walkman so I can listen to music when I’m out. At home I always have the radio on and I watch pop programmers on TV. I buy an album or cassette about once a month, usually something in the fob ten. I like pop music – it keeps me happy.

I know he’s only 14, but he’s driving me mad with his music. All day long blasting out of his bedroom! I can’t hear myself think! I can’t talk to her because he’s always got that walkman on and he can’t hear me. Either that or the TV. I’m worried about him because he doesn’t do anything else. He never reads, writes letters or phones his friends. It’s just pop music.
